Media watch group, Echo Chambers Busters says the age old method of framing news coverage as, “We are the good guys and they are the bad guys,” is dumbing down viewers and society in general. The television trick of, “Our cause is just and their cause is evil,” is not working on viewers anymore. Discussing politics through this prism is a waste of time for everyone involved.

Politics is about POWER! Maintaining it and expanding it. Plain and simple! Anything else, is irrelevant.

To illustrate this point, Jonathan Clikbaitman of ECB says there is a well known anecdote about Alexander the Great. Whether the anecdote is historically accurate or not, it is not important, it’s the point that the anecdote illustrates which is important.

Alexander captures a pirate and he interrogates him by asking, “What right do you have to terrorise the high seas?” The pirate naturally confused replies, “What the heck are you talking about? Me and you are in the same business. You do the same thing that I do, but with 300 ships, and they call you a general. And I’m the one who is terrorising the seas? I have but 1 boat!”

Fast forward to today, a couple of Africans off of the coast of Somalia highjack a tanker and everyone screams, “Piracy! This is a blatant violation of international law! We will not stand for this!”

Yet at the very same time as that is happening, 9 Iranian oil tankers, or 9 Iraqi oil tankers or 9 Venezuelan oil tankers or (insert the name of any country that happens to be on Uncle Sam’s shit-list at any given moment) and the message is, “We’re enforcing sanctions! We’re sanctions busting!”

One can split hairs and play semantics all day long, but at the end of the day, Johnathan says he knows a jack-move when he sees one. And that’s politics in a nutshell.

From the time of that anecdote till today, 3,000 years have passed by and the only thing that has changed is the weather. Politics is about an entity maintaining or gaining power, at the expense of another entity maintaining or losing its power. Once this point is clear, understanding the political events that unfold around you start to make a lot more sense.

There is no such thing as “Good Guys” and “Bad Guys” in politics; just guys trying to maintain and gain power. Everything else that is said, is said simply to confuse you.
